Defending champion David Ferrer
won a rain-delayed quarter-final match at the Heineken Open on Friday,
defeating Alejandro Falla 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
In a battle to hold serve, Ferrer
broke the Colombian six times to advance in two hours and seven minutes.
In the semi-finals, Ferrer will
face countryman Fernando Verdasco. The third seed also completed his
quarter-final encounter Friday, winning an all-Spanish encounter against
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-4.
Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber
advanced to the semi-finals after a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over second
seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain on Thursday. Playing in his seventh quarter-final
in eight visits to Auckland, Kohlschreiber saved both break points he faced and
won 74 per cent of points on first serve to prevail in one hour and 34 minutes.
"He had better chances in
the first set, but I think I won the bigger points today and that was the
difference, just a couple of points here and there," said Kohlschreiber.
"Maybe I had a bit more luck today. I had great timing with my shots and
managed to dictate most of the points, managing to keep the right balance
between fighting and taking risks at the right moment."
