Andy Roddick showed up to his
first tournament of the year sporting a new 'do. The 30-year-old American
arrived in Melbourne for this week's Kooyong Classic with a freshly shaved
mohawk.
"I'm pretty sure I only have
a year or two left with hair, so I decided to have fun with it while I
did," Roddick said during the introductory news conference.
When you already have a
retreating hair line, expensive sports cars and a supermodel wife, this is how
late-career crises manifest themselves.
Later in the press conference,
Roddick sniped at a reporter who asked whether his wife, Brooklyn Decker, would
be attending next week's Australian Open.
Roddick's dry humor is funny, but
it's even better when a reporter is up to the task and gives it right back to
him. Nice work, Australian guy whose wife is attending the Open.
The haircut and press-baiting
didn't help Roddick in his 2012 debut. He lost to Gael Monfils, 7-6, 7-6. Maybe
he shouldn't have worn a hat.
