Had it not been for the 30 degree-plus temperatures at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday, men's top seed Novak Djokovic would have barely broken a sweat in his first round victory.
Although Italian Lorenzi showed early promise in breaking the Serbian's serve, his challenge faded quickly as Djokovic ran away with the match 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 on centre court.
The 2011 champion hit 22 winners to the Italian's 10, and made just 13 unforced errors compared to Lorenzi's 30.
The win marks a strong return to competitive tennis for the Serbian, who took an extended break over the off-season.
He will face either Santiago Giraldo or qualifier Matteo Viola in the second round.
